One of the first symptoms that appear when you have the flu is a sore throat. A sore throat, also known as pharyngitis, is an inflammation of the pharynx tissues. This results to an uncomfortable, scratchy feeling that makes eating and drinking difficult. Although sore throat is a side effect of many other illnesses, it is commonly associated with the flu. If you are suffering from sore throat and flu, there are some things you can do to care for it or alleviate the discomfort.

William Schaffner, MD, says that sore throats caused by viruses such as the cold and flu virus, go away on its own. However, because sore throats can sometimes be caused by bacteria, it is important to have your sore throat checked if it gets discomforting enough. This way, the doctors can prescribe you with antibiotic medication to treat the infection.

In cases of sore throat and flu though, there is really no quick cure. The common cold resolves on its own in a matter of 7 to 10 days, and the best you can do is ease the discomfort. Drinking lots of fluids and getting enough rest help in making the sore throat more manageable. If you have a very sore throat, you could try sucking on ice cubes or your favorite frozen dessert. Popping a throat lozenge also helps soothe a sore throat.

A study conducted from the Pennsylvania State University, meanwhile, showed that taking in one to two teaspoons of honey before going to bed worked just as effectively as dextromethorphan, a typical cough medicine ingredient. During the day, gargling with a warm salt water solution will also help, in conjunction with a non-acidic vitamin C supplement.

When you have a sore throat, it’s wise to stay away from smoke and other irritants which could further inflame your throat. Talking should be kept to a minimum, and yelling or screaming should be avoided. Using a humidifier is also believed to help.

These are some ways to cope with sore throat and flu. Although there is no quick medical relief from sore throat caused by the colds or flu virus, there are still some steps you can take to ease the discomfort.
